Non-Surgical Blepharoplasty
A Compelling Alternative to Eyelid Surgery
By Lynn Adami BSN RN-BC — New Skin by Lynn, San Mateo
Drooping eyelids. Heavy upper lids. Laxity and fine lines beneath the eyes. These are among the most common aesthetic concerns Lynn Adami BSN RN-BC encounters at New Skin by Lynn in San Mateo — and among the most emotionally significant. The eyes are the first thing people notice about each other. When the eyelid skin begins to sag and lose its firmness it can make a person look tired, older, or less vibrant than they feel. For decades the only meaningful solution was surgical blepharoplasty. That has changed.
WHAT IS NON-SURGICAL BLEPHAROPLASTY?
Non-surgical blepharoplasty — also known as plasma fibroblasty or plasma eyelid lift — uses focused plasma energy to tighten, lift, and rejuvenate both upper and lower eyelid skin without incisions, cutting, stitching, or general anesthesia. At New Skin by Lynn it is performed using the Plexr device — one of the most clinically validated plasma pen platforms available — by Lynn Adami BSN RN-BC under physician medical direction as required by California law.
The treatment works by creating a controlled plasma arc between the device tip and the skin's surface — generating a precise micro-trauma at targeted points on the eyelid skin. This triggers two simultaneous responses — immediate contraction of skin fibers for visible lifting and tightening, and a longer-term healing response that stimulates new collagen and elastin production over the weeks following treatment.
HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO TRADITIONAL EYELID SURGERY?
Traditional surgical blepharoplasty is an established and effective procedure — for the right candidate it delivers dramatic and long-lasting results. The comparison below is not intended to suggest that one approach is universally superior — rather to help prospective clients understand which option may be more appropriate for their specific situation.
No incisions — plasma fibroblasty works entirely on the skin surface without cutting. Traditional blepharoplasty involves surgical incisions along the eyelid crease.
No general anesthesia — plasma fibroblasty uses topical numbing cream for comfort. Traditional blepharoplasty typically requires local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.
No stitches or sutures — plasma fibroblasty heals naturally. Traditional blepharoplasty requires sutures and a follow-up visit for removal.
Shorter recovery — plasma fibroblasty involves small carbon crusts at treated sites that resolve naturally over 5-10 days. Traditional blepharoplasty involves bruising swelling and a recovery period of several weeks.
Lower cost — plasma fibroblasty is significantly more accessible than surgical blepharoplasty.
Multiple sessions — a series of 2-3 plasma fibroblasty sessions spaced several weeks apart is recommended for optimal results compared to a single surgical procedure.
Degree of correction — for significant upper eyelid hooding or excess skin that obscures vision surgical blepharoplasty may deliver more comprehensive correction than plasma fibroblasty. An honest consultation is essential to determine which approach is appropriate.
WHO IS NON-SURGICAL BLEPHAROPLASTY FOR?
Plasma fibroblasty is well suited for clients who:
-
Are experiencing early to moderate upper eyelid hooding or lower eyelid laxity
-
Are not ready for or interested in surgical intervention
-
Want to avoid general anesthesia
-
Are seeking a meaningful improvement with minimal downtime
-
Have fine lines and crepiness around the eye area that detract from their overall appearance
-
Want to delay or avoid surgery while still achieving visible improvement
AN IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION — FITZPATRICK SKIN TYPE
Non-surgical blepharoplasty with plasma energy is not suitable for all skin types. Clients with Fitzpatrick Skin Types 4-6 — deeper skin tones — face an elevated risk of both hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation following plasma treatment. This means the treated area may become noticeably darker or lighter than the surrounding skin during healing.
At New Skin by Lynn this contraindication is taken seriously. Lynn assesses every client's skin type during the complimentary consultation and will decline to perform the treatment if the risk of pigmentation irregularity is unacceptable. Client safety and outcome integrity are never compromised for the sake of a booking.
WHAT DOES A SESSION INVOLVE?
At New Skin by Lynn non-surgical blepharoplasty sessions begin with a thorough consultation to assess suitability and establish realistic expectations. On treatment day a topical numbing cream is applied and allowed to take effect before treatment begins.
The Plexr device is then applied in a precise pattern across the targeted eyelid area — upper lower or both depending on the treatment plan. Small carbon dots form at each treated point immediately — these are part of the normal healing process and resolve naturally over 5-10 days.
Most clients experience mild swelling and redness immediately following treatment — resolving within 24-48 hours. The carbon crusts must not be picked or disturbed — allowing them to resolve naturally is essential to the healing process and final result.
A series of 2-3 sessions spaced several weeks apart is recommended. Results develop progressively as collagen remodeling takes effect — with full results typically visible 8-12 weeks after the final session.
WHAT RESULTS CAN CLIENTS EXPECT?
Clients who are well-selected candidates for plasma fibroblasty consistently report meaningful improvement in upper eyelid heaviness, lower eyelid laxity, and fine lines around the eye area. The results are progressive and natural-looking — a refreshed and more open eye appearance that does not look surgically altered.
It is important to approach plasma fibroblasty with realistic expectations. It is not a surgical substitute for significant excess skin — but for early to moderate laxity it is one of the most effective non-surgical options available. For clients who are not ready for surgery and want meaningful improvement — it is frequently the right answer.
LYNN'S CLINICAL PERSPECTIVE
"Non-surgical blepharoplasty is one of the treatments I find most rewarding to perform — the eye area is so central to how a person presents themselves that meaningful improvement there has a disproportionate impact on how clients feel about their overall appearance. The key is honest patient selection. I will only perform this treatment on clients who are genuinely appropriate candidates — the right skin type, the right degree of laxity, and realistic expectations about what plasma fibroblasty can and cannot achieve. When those conditions are met the results are genuinely impressive and clients are consistently delighted."
